The 3 exceptions to know about numbers

1. Năm and lăm

• The “  năm  ” is used to say 5 ( năm ) and 50 ( năm mươi ).
• The “  lăm  ” is placed in place of 5 ( năm ) from 15 then 25, 35, etc.

2. Mười and mươi

• “ Mười » means “  ten  ” has a descending tone up to 19.
• “ Mươi » without tone means “  ten  ” and loses tone above 20.

10 =Mười
20 = Hai mươi
30 = Ba mươi
40 = Bon mươi
50 = …

3. Một and mốt

• The “m ộ t” has a dot underneath to say 1 then 11.
• there is a rising tone on the “m ố t” from 21 then 31, 41, 51, etc.

Vocabulary

• Hundred(s) = trăm
• Thousand(s) = nghìn
• Million(s) = triệu
• Billion(s) = tỷ

Examples:

• 1 000 000 =word triệu
• 1 00 =một trăm
• 1 1 =mười word
• 1,000 = một nghìn
  => 1369,000 =word triệu ba trăm sáu mươi chin nghìn

• Bao nhiêu = how much
• Tiền = money

Dialogue to ask the price and lower it

– Cái này bao nhiêu tiền = how much is that?

– Cái này 500,000 ( năm trăm nghìn) đồng = that’s (price) dongs

– 400,000 ( bốn trăm nghìn)!

– 450,000 ( bốn trăm năm mươi nghìn)!
